Often abused women need to know steps to financial freedom before they can truly get on their feet and start their lives over. Economic unknowns can add to the stress of being an abused woman trying to get out of a negative situation.
Because of this situation, there are a new series of state-sponsored workshops in Ohio that seek to teach victims and survivors of domestic abuse about finances and how to handle them. Called the Financial Freedom NOW series, it will be offered in various major cities in Ohio and Verizon Wireless offered a $12,600 grant for the course materials.
Becoming financially free seems like an unachievable goal to many former victims of domestic abuse and these women and their children are in need of financial guidance. Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray states that, “We see this as an opportunity to give people the strength and opportunity to control their lives and free themselves from these abusive relationships.”
Director of the Ohio Domestic Violence Network Nancy Neylon says abusive husbands often financially trap women by taking their pay, refusing to let them work and controlling their spending habits. She states, “Financial abuse is a key aspect of that control.”
These types of programs can offer formerly abused woman the steps to financial freedom so they can free in every aspect of their lives.
