You can find greater financial freedom by buying what you need rather than what you want or think you should have. By figuring out if the item is worth the hours of work it takes to pay for it, you can better decide if you can really afford it.

Consider these ways to figure out whether you are in a position to make a purchase – or not:

  • decide whether it is something you will want a month or year from now or if you will change your mind quickly about it;

  • comparison shop to get the cheapest price and negotiate for a deal to get the best for less;

  • figure out if you can borrow the item from a library, neighbor, friend, swap club, etc.;

  • certain major purchase expenses can be shared with others, such as a car or a boat;

  • barter to see if you can exchange goods or services rather than paying cash;

  • decide if there is something else in your budget you can cut back on to afford the new item;

  • sell something you don’t need to get the money for something new you want;

  • make green choices when possible and recycle items you have that can be used for something else.

By carefully monitoring your spending habits to buy only what you need and not what you want, you can become financially free. Save money, spend the least for the most and maximize your money and your worth for the financial freedom you deserve.
